Sculptural pruning, including bonsai. Japanese maples, smaller pines and a variety of other plants have the potential to be exceptional showplace trees. People often buy an expensive specimen at the nursery only to have it become nondescript, plain or looking like a large mushroom. Their original purpose was to have the kind of structural character seen in Japanese or Chinese gardens. I have a photo portfolio showing examples of my work.

Ornamental pruning. This is general tree and shrub pruning, both for health and beauty. This includes pruning to improve a view, provide clearance, remove weight, provide more light, shape and generally improve the tree.

Renovation and restoration. Renovation is the process of bringing plants back to originally desired size and shape. Many plants, rhododendrons and lilacs are the most common, outgrow their location in the garden. The renovation process brings them back to the proper size and shape. Restoration is the process of correcting poor pruning.

Fruit pruning. Pruning for fruit production is entirely different from ornamental pruning. Fruit pruning emphasizes bud and bloom production and is a lot more intensive, removing larger numbers of branches to allow sun to get to the developing fruit. The various species are treated differently due to their very different individual growth habits. Grapes and berry vines are included in this category.

Bio-Fertilization. This will help ensure overall plant health and is a combination of deep root feeding and top dressing. Deep root feeding for close proximity to the rootlets, or feeder roots with a balanced low nitrogen fertilizer. Too much nitrogen encourages lots of foliage and fast growth but we want to encourage the tree to develop a strong vascular system and roots. This service also includes a top dressing with a product that contains nitrogen phosphorus and potassium plus trace elements and mycorrhizae, a beneficial fungus that live in a symbiotic relationship with plant roots and increase the roots ability to absorb water and essential elements.

I can help you plan what is of value and what is not, what is troublesome and what is not, schedule your time, sequence the work, work up material lists, maintenance and costs relating to your garden efforts.
